2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Poor Reception
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.
Trend of Key Acquisitions
The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full message from the president's communication:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to mind and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our fans.
The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of conversations, Ben starts with us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having spent the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most popular franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all looking forward to continue observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that change every session. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as production progresses.
